Through Baron van Pallandt, the Estate Breukelaar to the 'Nieuwe Berghorst'

Baron van Pallandt, descendant of an old noble family, lived at the Castle of Pallandt, surrounded by the Estate Breukelaar which he owned. In 1915 the Baron of Pallandt dies and in 1916 the Estate is sold.

Bernard Stronks also bought a few acres. All the sold land was tripped of the trees that once grew there. The roots were still in the soil and had to be removed, with horse and man power. This was extremely hard work that the buyers had to do themselves.

On the piece of land a house was built which was named the 'New Berghorst', probably because it was close to the 'Old Berghorst'. It took years before the ground was fertile enough to sow and harvest.

Bernard Stronks marries in September 1917 with Johanna Hendrika Wildenbeest. They did not have an easy start. The war of 1914 to 1918 did not have so much influence, but they did not get a lot of return of their land in the first few years and they ate into the little capital they had.

To get some more income Bernard made clogs and also started and nursery for hens from their farm. Despite the difficulties they created a lovely place for their offspring. We hope to enjoy this for a long time, however the end is in sight.

The Council of 'Oude IJsselstreek' has marked this beautiful area as an industrial one and Hofskamp Oost stage 2 is now before the Province of Gelderland for approval. The 'Nieuwe Berghorst' is stage 3 so there is not a lot of time left.

We invite everyone who has a story to tell about this inheritance to enter it on this site.
